Local man Jassim Rashid won the inaugural Ramadan Online Community Cup – an online gaming tournament organised by the Supreme Committee for Delivery & Legacy (SC).
Rashid beat Abdulatif Alhor 2-1 in the final of the FIFA 20 competition, which was set up to keep the SC community engaged while they spend most of their time at home during the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic.
The competition also had a charitable focus, with the SC donating money to Qatar Charity for every goal scored. As a result, more than QAR 37,000 has been pledged to support local people who have been affected by the coronavirus.
It proved to be a close and entertaining final between Rashid and Alhor, who were both invited to take part in the competition by the SC’s Community Engagement Division.
Both finalists received special gifts from the SC. Rashid said: “Winning the tournament was a real highlight for me. I think this was a great way to bring football fans together, in a spirit of sportsmanship and unity, during these difficult times.”
Alhor, who finished as the runner-up, said the tournament’s charitable aspect motivated him to take part.
“It made the game rewarding and made me want to score as many goals as possible. It gave me an incentive to play my best and I feel proud to have contributed while making it all the way to the final.”
The tournament was organised in collaboration with the Qatar Community Football League (QCFL), which has been forced to postpone its season due to COVID-19. The SC invited employees, members of its Community Engagement initiatives, legacy programme participants and QCFL players to take part in the event.
Mead Al Emadi, the SC's Community Engagement Manager, said: “We are lucky to have such engaged members in our community who are equally passionate about football and giving back. We’ve successfully proved the power of the beautiful game in connecting people during difficult times.”
Zaid Mosawy, Assistant Director, Business Analysis & Planning, at the SC, was involved in organising the tournament – and he was delighted with the feedback from participants.
“Engagement has been strong, combining the Ramadan spirit and fair play, with a competitive fun rivalry,” said Mosawy. “The highlight of the tournament for me has been the number of goals scored and how much we raised for Qatar Charity. The goal we set was to engage people from across the SC programmes, and ask them to stay home, have fun and stay connected – and this competition has definitely achieved that.”
